i have a rose called Zephrine Drouhin, I bought it today, the place I would like to put it is south west facing, but it would mean placing it in a large container about 24 inches wide and about 15 inches high, will it be ok in this or does it need to be in the ground? I am in Hull east Yorkshire if that matters, It would be growing against a wall on the corner of my house with a lattice frame behind it,

I know this rose suffers dreadfully from black spot so watch out for that. Roses can be ok in large pots but they need constant feeding and watering during the growing season. At the begining of each spring take off as much compst as you can and replace with new. Good luck. It is a lovely scented rose and almost thornless too.

it is a vigorous rose and will be ok in the pot only for a short while [3-4 yrs. You will have to keep it well watered and fed. Hull wont make a difference :o)

It looks like it would be best in the ground, does anyone know if the roots are destructive, I am thinking of taking up a paver and digging a hole and filling it with soil to plant it in, But the hole will be about 12 inches from my foundations and the same distance from a drain pipe,

as there are many roses 'round the door' if the roots caused a problem we would have heard of it by now. so I don't see it as a problem

It's a fair sized pot so it might be OK, I think a rose is usually better off in the ground though. I grow this rose against a north facing wall under the neighbours spreading damson tree and yet it still does well so it can tolerate less than an ideal aspect pretty well. Smells delightful too!
