I want to plant a bamboo - is there any special soil it
requires and what is the difference between the broad
and narrow leaf (apart from the obvious). How tall do
they get at maturity?

If you decide to grow bamboo then my advice is to grow it in a pot. As Cammomile said, they spread like wild fire and are very difficult to eradicate once they do.

I agree with the above, I would never plant bamboo in the ground. It's too much of a risk!

It all depends on the bamboo, please be aware that if you go for a clumping bamboo then planting out in the garden will be no problem, however if you go for a bamboo that has runners[ rhizome roots] then this can be a thug and be very rampant if allowed to, if you were to plant one of the running bamboos then a barrier needs to planted deep down to contain them.

Having seen how 'non-invasive' bamboos have taken over my daughter's garden, I wouldn't touch them!

I agree, be warned I've learnt it IS difficult to find a variety that is little trouble mine are SO messy in my small garden where they sit on a patio area, probably not happy in their pots.....but they are NOT coming out (:0)

I would be careful what you buy as they can be so rampant that they migrate to your neighbours and are nigh on impossible to get rid of. Ask the garden centre which type doesn't get out of hand.
