If the rhododendron is a dwarf variety, and there's plenty of room behind it with good light, no reason why not - just bear in mind tallest plants go at the back, smallest at the front.

depends how much room there is - don`t want to get to close to the rhody and the soil will be dry and shady so improve soil and buy plants that will cope with dry shade
