Can I use potting compost that has been in plant pots since last year

As I make my own compost I will sometimes keep it as a base for new compost and add further nutrients to it. I would not do this with a commercial peat compost or if I thought that the original plant might be diseased.

I agree with Great definitely don't use it to pot plants into again, of course if the compost has just sat in pots with nothing in them it will be fine :-)

This is interesting and something I have been wondering about myself, thanks!

Note the comments of Bulbaholic and Moongrower (Mr & Mrs MB and posted at the same time).

Think of how many times I get cross when you try to reuse potting compost when we are repotting Frits and Arisameas :-)

Just goes to prove that put two gardeners together and they will not always agree! In the case of Mr & Mrs MB this is very true :-)

I empty mine onto the compost heap as it has given up all it's nutrients. Or else throw it over your potatoes if you grow them
