Has anyone 'stooled' a Corylus purpurea? I'm just about to plant a 6 ft bare-root one, and wonder about the timing of keeping it relatively short. Many thanks.

Thanks Julien . . . do you think it would be OK for me to do it now, or should I wait a while?

Can I ask what Stooled means please. It's a term I've never heard of. Thanks.

Hi Scottish . . . new to me, too, until last week when a member of my gardening group said that she'd stooled one of her trees. I asked her what it meant, and she said "cutting back to ground level" Sounds drastic, doesn't it?!

Thanks for clarifying for me Sheila - that wasn't what first came to my mind ;)

Yes you should be ok now but just check on one of the stems in case the sap has started to rise, if so then doing later will not be a problem.

Thanks Julien - I will try it when I plant it, one day soon.

Yes, i have carried this procedure out on many occasions on corylus that have got too big for their positions, always do well and respond well, and selective pruning in the summer of certain stems to keep the desired shape.
