Please help me identify this weed

Its growing wild behind my backyard, loads of them. I think without the managed gardens it would take over the area. Probably pretty common but having tried I can't identify it. Please help! Thanks.

I think that's Comfrey. Lucky you..as if you collect the leaves and steep them in water for 6 weeks you'll have a good organic plant feed that you dilute and water onto your plants.

Looks like Comfrey to me its from the Borage family.

Thanks. Does look quite like it. Its everywhere! Its quite a dry area too which seems to go against what I've read as to what it likes? Have noticed Sweet Violet's growing underneath it. Its actually a fairly disused part of a path that goes in between the gardens, people no longer run their wheelie bins up and down it. I'm quite close to the middle of town too in the middle of a row of terraced houses.

you lucky thing. Thats a good find!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

GROAN!! It may be good for making compost and a liquid plant food, but it's so invasive that when we moved here, I took TWELVE barrowloads out of one area alone. It spread by deep rhizomous roots as well as seeding itself.

I don't think I shall ever get rid of it as new seedlings pop up all the time. Yes, it does like dry areas - but also well-drained but reasonably moist soil. It's a nightmare in my garden. :-(((

DO NOT put any roots into your compost bin - it's a chore, but cut off the leaves and compost them, or else, make the liquid feed with it as Gaia suggested.

Thanks spritz! I'm just going to leave it be I think, its not actually in my yard more on a shared piece of land behind the garden, but I'm pretty sure seedlings pop up from time to time in my garden which I catch in time. I was doing the good thing and clearing up on behalf of everyone but decided to leave this little area and do a little investigating. Thanks GOY :)))))

Just looked in my herb book its not comfrey.
It looks more like wild garlic ive got it in my garden

Wild garlic flowers are at the top in a flat spray - these flowers look, in the photo, as though they hang down in clusters, as do Comfrey flowers. Are the leaves and stems bristly, Ww?

I'm 90% convinced its Comfrey, although I thought the leaves looked a little too large (wide)? Will have a closer look during my lunch break.

Just put a second pic up, the leaves at the bottom are about 5 inches wide but smaller near to the top. The stems are bristly spritz.

How about deadnettle or one of that family|? I have no idea what Comfrey looks like.

Take it from me - I know EXACTLY what Comfrey looks like - and feels like, too, from bitter experience and pulling bristles out of my hands! That is Comfrey...100% sure.

There are different cultivars - I have a blue-flowered one which is less invasive; there are variegated forms, yellow-flowered ones and the 'orrible one I have, which has pale blue & pinky flowers. There's one just like this growing out on the lane, with white flowers. It can stay there! :-(((

I had a lucky escape then, I nearly fell in a 'thicket' of it while looking for the cat a few nights back. Thanks everyone :)

I don't know what to say to convince you, Hijuju, and I don't want to argue about it either, so I'll say no more.

yup definately comfrey...I used to pick it for my gran as she was convinced soaking her feet in a tea made with it was good for her arthritis!!!!! Hijuju google comfrey on google images and you'll see a lot of plants that look like this one.

I agree with Spitzhenry, as Ive looked it up in my Wild Flower book and it is definately Comfrey. In fact Id looked it up before I posted my answer in the first place.
