About cannas.

I was given a large canna in a pot back in the autumn - there's no sign of life yet, when should I expect it to come up? I overwintered it in my cold greenhouse. Thanks guys.

Agree with Motinot, tip the contents out and check for signs of life - I did this with mine at the weekend, thinking it was dead (they were out on the balcony all winter with no protection) but no, there to one side were obvious signs of growth, just below the soil level, and the corms were solid and white looking. Repotted it and its now outside, but suggest, if yours is okay, you stand it out during the day and bring it in at night. If the whole thing is fine and healthy, you might want to split it and pot the bits up separately - they do swell and grow large in a season.

Tug - I bet the temp did drop below -4...oh dear. The person who gave the plant to me kept it under a carport, so I thought it would be ok in the greenhouse.
Thanks Motinot and Bamboo. If I tip it out, what is the correct depth to replant and is multipurpose compo ok?
Sorry about the duplicate question folks - GoY seemed to be having problems yesterday and I didn't think the first one went through.

Multi purpose is fine, and just bury it to where it was previously.

Ok thanks :-)

The soil temperature has to be at least 19 deg. C before the rhizomes will sprout...if they are still alive! If the temperature in the greenhouse got much below -4 deg. C, the rhizomes might have frozen. If you don't see sprouts in the next month, unpot it and see if you have rhizomes, or black mush. Good luck, Sid!
