I have started off a number of trays of seeds in my greenhouse and the top of the compost in some trays has gone green and slightly slimy looking. Firstly - is this something I should try to avoid as it could afect germination? Also, what is the reason for it? Is it the result of overwatering or the fact that given the lovely weather we've been having it has been very hot in there? I love growing from seed - I almost find it more satisfying that buying plants - so I want to make sure I am doing it right. Thanks.

Some good advice for you from Windy. You may also find it helps to water with Cheshunt Compound, it will help avoid damping off of the young seedlings as well.

Nothing to blush about - made me laugh actually! Isn't it funny how you often don't know what gender some of the people here are? I've made many assumptions only to find out the opposite thing at a later stage. It doesn't help you that there is the other muddywellies, who was on here first, who is a man - very confusing!

it sounds like over watering to me, its a case of trial & error.. ...i used to have this problem too but with my dads help ive managed to avoid it to sum degree....FIRSTLY i now only ever water my seed trays from underneath not directly...i always use water trays now & also for small pots.then if your seed compost does not soak up all the water then you know your overwatering. SECONDLY ive found the perfect growing temperture to be around 20~25 degrees, any hotter & its doors & windows open...hope ive helped in some way to resolve your problem ;)
