Saved from the skip...
I spent half an hour queueing to get into the council recycling centre yesterday afternoon and as I was throwing in my last bag of builders' rubble I stopped someone from throwing this away..

It's about 20"(50cm) square and as high. I've already got a selection of pots for the yard and so this one is a bonus and I'm wondering what to put in it. The other planting will be mostly white with a few splashes of purple and pale pink.
I got a white chaenomeles last weekend (half price end of season) but it's only in an 8" pot so a few stages away from repotting into something this big.
Any thoughts would be welcome.

What a lucky find! I've grown viburnum bonariensis in a pot like this, also asian lilies, zonal geraniums.(Not all at once of course!) It depends whether you want annuals or perennials, tall or short, or colours to blend with your other plants.

Hi, a pot that size, you can grow almost anything you wanted in it, small shrub, conifer, box ball, pyramid etc.
People round your way must be very rich, to be throwing away a pot like that!!, Derek.

Find of the week, well done you. What about a miniature garden. I've done something similar with a large pot. Being off the ground makes them easier to see and appreciate.

Tesco are selling root wrapped standard bays at the moment

They were throwing it out because it was 'broken' and as you will see if you look carefully it is indeed broken - there's quite a distinct chip on the base that makes it completely unusable!! Such a shame that I will have to turn that side to the wall.

I was thinking overnight of filling it with hosta plantaginea - I've only seen pictures of these hostas but they have lovely white flowers and are supposed to be fragrant.

Does a bay need a lot of sun? One of the problems is the lack of sunshine - even when it's around it doesn't really get into the yard until late afternoon. I have a Belfast sink and a brewers' sink waiting to be made into miniature gardens - they're in storage at the moment along with other big pots.

You lucky thing. Anything we try to pick up in our tip the 'managers' there ask us for money saying it's their property now. (I expect they are right as I think they pay for the rights to control the tip).

Good save. What about Viburnum Kilimanjaro.

Interesting Sprog - technically it hadn't been tipped as they were just hauling out of their car and it went straight into the back of mine. 'Course it's stuck there until I can persuade a friend to help me move it - no chance of me moving it on my own.
I like viburnum - always used to confuse them with hydrangea from a distance.

Well "rescued" Urbanite .
It's gone to a good home , by the sound of it !

Broken indeed, and in a few months the scar would get covered with green and disappear. Lucky you to be on the scene!

Got a couple of pots of hosta plantaginea each with about 15 crowns showing plus a hellebore, for early interest, and will transplant a bowl of daffs as well.

Looking at viburnum for one of the taller big pots that I have.
