Bearded Iris.

I love them, but didn't have space or sunshine enough in my last garden. Now I have my chance to get some lovely ones for here and plant them in full sun where hopefully they will thrive and spread. Now, my question is....which are the best ones for scent. It's might seem an odd qu., but I love the scent of iris, and there are so many to choose from, so I thought I'd go for the best scent....any ideas?

Must admit that I have never sniffed an iris, I didn't know that any were scented!

Binny's have a few on their website Karen, might be worth a wee look just to see their comments.

Lol! Thanks Angie! I can't believe you haven't sniffed an Iris BA! Lol...they have a honey-like perfume. I really love it! Have you had a look at Brian's rather pretty bulb? He needs an ID..I suggested you...it's on his blog...'Help Needed'.

Thanks Angie. Looks like the beautiful 'Jane Philips' might be what I'm after. I remember seeing it on several friends' pages on here.

Karen - don't forget iris are spectacular for about two weeks of the year, and can look pretty ropey for long periods. I decided to plant them where they put on a good show, but I didn't have to look at them all the time.

Karen have you looked at the Cayeux Iris site. There are some fantastic photos etc.

Thanks Andrew.I was watching the prog. About Great Dixter and saw Iris grown in huge pots, so I thought aha....a good way to grow them so they can be moved out of the way when they're not performing. That's just what they do at Great Dixter.

Yes thanks Marjorie's. I've just been looking on there this evening. I think I shall see what is available locally first.

Drool over the Seagate Irises web site (I have it in my diary to go to the gardens next month). I'm not sure why they're not selling online or by mail order anymore but they would certainly give you some information about the varieties.

Or take a look at http://www.bearded-iris.co.uk/Fragrant%20Irises.html. There's only 30 pages to choose from.

Thanks Urbanite. The nurseries that do sell online only send out their plants in the autumn anyway, so I think it will be better to buy locally. I don't yet have the big pots I need, so there's no desperate rush. I have planted a new one in the garden last week, I don't think it is fragrant, but it's a gorgeous, nearly black purple. Black Dragon is the name, and it has maroon streaking in the leaves too. So I do have one at least!

Lemondog has a good selection of iris photos from last summer - that's how I got the Seagate info.
I don't think my yard will have the sunshine for irises but I love them and may just make do with a couple of flags in/by the pond when it gets done.
