Bird seed germinating in my garden .

I stopped feeding the birds mid April and the spent seed that had dropped have germinated so much.

This was no mess seed.

Is their a good bird seed that does not germinate when I do start feeding them again?

Not that I am aware of, we get all sorts growing where the birds have dropped it in our case from the suet balls as, other than that we only feed peanuts and sunflower hearts.

This was a large bag of mixed no mess seed for the garden birds.

I did wonder if I laid membrane under feeder at least they would only drop on top and be easier to pick up.

Think need to try sunflower hearts when I fill feeders again

Thanks Mg

Sorry, Scotkat, but even sunflower heart bits germinate! It surprised me but it happens. I will admit that it is not as bad as with black sunflower seeds.

I remember that the makers of Trill budgie seeds made their seeds sterile so they couldn't germinate. Apparently they passed the seeds through gamma rays or suchlike to kill them off. This wasn't done to stop them accidentally germinating around the place but because some entrepreneurs found out that the mix contained hemp seeds and used the budgie seeds to grow cannabis.

Maybe there are seed manufactures that do the same thing? Or maybe it's less bother for them to include hemp seeds in the first place so they don't have to sterilise them?

I've had Cabbage, Carrots and assorts growing from my bird seed LOL :o))

We now have our bird table on the lawn so anything that germinates just gets mown off. (Does mean moving it a bit when we cut the grass though)

Problem with no mess birdseed is that the birds can't read. What makes it "no mess"? Unless you put it on a huge slab then won't the seed be scattered by virtually any disturbance, as the birds pick out the bits they like.

Yes Urbanite been thinking of getting a large slab and drilling a hole to slot bird feeding station in or a large tub and filling with large pebbles.

Then I could sweep up the mess.

Instead of digging out the mess.

The best no mess bird feed I found was from Pets at Home. Unlike all the others I've tried, including Peckish, was that the birds didn't eat all the different seeds. That's not to say it hasnt germinated, it's just not so prolific. You can buy feeders to which you attach a saucer like contraption on the bottom, which catches most of what falls out of the feeders. This, if wide enough, also allows ground feeding birds stand on it and eat the left overs. The robins and chaffinch make full use of it in my garden.
FYI Kath, In winter I bought 25kg of sunflower hearts on line for just over £30. It works out much cheaper in the long run providing you have somewhere to keep in whilst you use it. It came in 2x12.5 bags.

There is Chapelwood Finest Wild Bird No Grow Seed Mix. I have used it and not noticed anything growing, but that's not to say it doesn't! My observational skills aren't the best.

or you could try this:

Sterilize your bird seed. For a gallon of seed, place it in a paper bag and cook it on high in the microwave for 5 minutes. Or in a conventional oven, place on a flat baking sheet and cook for 30 minutes at 300 degrees.

if you have the time or inclination!

I changed to a 'no mess' seed a couple of years ago..not sure of the make, but a well known one from a G.centre..I also bought a new feeder with a tray attached, just in case, which has drainage holes in it..I had two left over pavers from my round circle, which OH placed underneath..result? no more mess :o) Trouble is,the birds discard the yellowy ones..would they be maize,or corn ? no idea..but only the Pigeons eat them..in fact I only have a pair who come to the feeder at the moment..definitely 'an Item ':o)and they manage to balance on the tray, with difficulty..no shame at all, those two ! Lol.

Myron, Trill no longer include hemp in their budgie seed.

It now contains; canary seed, red millet, white millet, yellow millet and oats.

My budgies get seed as a treat. They are on a specialised diet.

Eamonn, do I detect sarcasm? I never needed to know I have have no room for a bird table, plus the local kids would scare them off even if I did.

We have a little Field Mouse that comes for its picking of the fallen seeds LOL.
They say if you have mice you won't have rats, hope the saying is true? :o))

Alex, I didn't think that Trill was still made, never seen it, probably because I've never looked for it as I've not had a budgie since I was a little lad.

I can understand them not including hemp seeds anymore. Apart from the cost of irradiating the seeds, I did hear that a few seeds in a packet could still get through the sterilisation process and the cannabis growers just planted a couple of packets in the hope that a few would grow.

I really don't think that the budgies would miss the hemp seeds too much though. ;O)

My budgies certainly don't seem to mind.

Trill is still easy to find where I live.
