Meconopsis are, bar one, natives of the Himalayas. They do not like the heat... most of my English friends who have tried to grow them have given up in despair! They grow fine in the north of Scotland where it is cooler and wetter. You will need to introduce a lot of humus for the meconopsis to cope with clay soil, as they only do well on acidic soil.
Take a look at http://gardenofeaden.blogspot.com/2009/05/how-to-plant-and-grow-himalayan-blue.html for more advice on growing.

Dig over and incorporate humus rich material, things like composted horse manure, organic soil conditioning compost, leaf mould, anything like that. This Meconopsis likes moist conditions, does better in a shadier spot.
