Bonsai trees

I am a teacher and as an end of year present one of my children has given me a bonsai tree. It looks well established. I haven't the faintest idea what sort of tree it is, or whether it is an indoor or outdoor variety. I would hate it to die, but know nothing about bonsai. Can anyone help?

They are usually something pretty simple like chinese elm when from local garden centres - start with a google image search?? Lots of watering always essential

It's a difficult area of gardening - very specialised. I suggest that you google it or borrow a book from the Library. I know that you have to prune the roots AND the top growth but have never done it myself!
