Thank you all, thought they had planted curly kale, but its not very curly and the ID sticks lost, but didn't want to eat the leaves without knowing.

:) I planted Chinese Leaves in the autumn, didn't label as thought I was sure to remember. Duh - must be getting old!

That doesn't look like Chinese leaves to me...

Moon grower, it was ME that planted chinese leaves & forgot what they were, so it does happen.
Why would you think hoax?
I made the suggestion that hers looked like kale as I have grown that.

Bathgate I have genuinely forgotten what I've planted at times... Green_finger all I'm saying is they do not look like Chinese leaves to me!

Yes, but when the plants finally grow and you are looking right at them and maybe upload a photo of them; would that trigger a memory - "Oh yes, this must be the Chinese Cabbage I planted." or something you've seen at the market? Very strange to draw a complete blank.

Im genuinely shocked at your response Bathgate, personally I have felt really supported with my learning on this site to date ... We are not all experienced or knowledgable, but at least my children and I are trying to learn. I joined here a couple of years ago and started gardening at home with flowers when we bought our house. I am a still a 'beginner' on the allotment, and my two young children enthusiastically scattering seeds randomly doesn't always help, but they enjoy it and they are learning lots and they are getting out in the fresh air ! Needless to say I am still waiting to identify some things as they grow, but yes I think I will be able to make out pumpkins, sweetcorn and carrots. BUT as I said above, I thought it was Curly Kale, but it doesn't look like Curly Kale, it looks like broccoli to me to... so apologies for not being the competent gardener expected. Thank you Moongrower and green fingers, you have always been helpful !

Bathgate, I'm sorry but I think you are being far too hard on Heidi. She is trying to help her young children to learn about growing food as part of that she allows them to scatter seeds without really noticing what they were scattering where. Lots of gardeners one onto GoY asking for advice on plant i.d. after having lost the planting labels. When we had a very large veggie garden we wrote down on paper what was where as sticks do vanish but most folk don't. Perhaps it is all different in the US, I wouldn't know.

Heidib, keep doing what you're doing & asking questions - it's how we learn & there is always more to know.
Whether it's broccoli or kale, time will tell & it's looking good & healthy.
Good on you for encouraging your children too, so many parents sit them in front of a screen so they can get on with something. All credit to you even tho it must be more difficult not to get distracted.

OK I apologize for coming across so harshly.

You are quite right, Bathgate.... if I had simply asked 'is this kale or broccoli please?' it might have saved me having to suffer your judgmental, inspector clouseau type comments. long and short - clearly you have never let kids loose on a growing patch to enjoy themselves! our allotment Badgersbrook is family focused and over run with kids, chickens, rabbits , bees - its not the Great British allotment competition by a long shot...

To the rest of you helpful folk, The fully grown photos were last years end of season... and we really did just throw everything in and see what would come up.. to our delight everything did (except peas weren't great) and we had bumper crops, and we entered into some competitions with the gardening club (freak veg with our forked carrots - must use sand - still edible though!!!). We learnt a lot about spacing things out, and yield (we don't need any more than one brussel sprout tree!) !!! and Beetroot and chocolate cake is delicious. This years isn't doing so great at the moment, possibly because of the weather. but will post more photos soon. Thank you for your interest, we are really excited

Seems your apology was a bit hollow Bathgate...

I can supervise and instruct my grandchildren as much as I like but the outcome is always unpredictable and full of the unexpected, including disappearing name tags! Get real and cut the sarcasm bathgate.

How rude !! Must be nice to be perfect. People like Bathgate are the reason that I seldom use goy anymore
I thought he came from Scotland with the name Bathgate and was unhappy about a fellow countryman having such an attitude but I'm relieved to see he's in America!!!!!!

Your comment to me was foolish and inflammatory and contributed nothing of any value to the conversation. All you did was chime in to aggravate a very delicate situation with your mindless drivel. Someone your age ought to know better. Grow up!
