It's Arion ater, the subspecies Rufus is a red variant.
It is the smaller Deroceras (white and slimy slugs) and Milax (black keeled slugs) that do the real damage to plants. Arion ater will eat anything, even each other at a push.

Once in a while, a shipment of plants from northern California will include a Banana Slug (Ariolimax), scaring our younger carryouts, but not, sadly, the other slugs. :/

took a picture of 15 small slugs feeding on a 'still alive' worm back in the summer. The slugs are amazing group of critters though I 'm not particularly impressed with them when they are ravaging my plants.
