Would now be a good time to lift an overgrown, well established peony and replant with a new smaller different variety of peony?

hi Amsterdam happy new year to you.what was you intending doing with the old one if you was going to throw it then yes dig it up. if you are going to keep it wait until spring to dig up and plant the new one but do not plant them very deep.if your weather is like ours here mine is starting to show new life all ready good luck.

Paeonies start into growth below ground very early in the spring. I reckon now is the best time to move or split them, in fact I split two of mine just before Christmas, as soon as the top growth died off. The resting growth bed should be just above the soil level when replanted.

Bathgate. Thanks for your comment. Ground here is very wet and warm so I thought it worth a try, but will wait til spring.
Kennyboy, happy New year to you too. There's me hoping for a good gardening year! Was intending to keep old peony but reduce its clump and replant? Will wait till spring whenever that will come! I feel a bit out of sync as the weather has been so mild.
Andrew you've thrown me a curveball! Am tempted to dig it up now but what if we get a cold snap in Jan or Feb? Mmm...

You are welcome, a cold snap would heave your plant up and out.

But paeonies are extremely hardy - our 'cold snaps' won't do them any harm.

I'm in agreement with Andrew above - recommended time to move or split is actually autumn, but given that all we've had so far is an extended autumn and no winter to speak of, I'd get it done now. There's not even any cold forecast for the next week or so, just more mildish but wet.... not even sure there's been sufficient cold for paeonies to flower this year anyway.

Where Amsterdam lives should work, not up in Scotland though where we are due for another cold spell.

We just had a cold spell and all my growing plants are in quick retreat. It's not really a cold spell, it's Winter. Wait until Spring

« Happy 2016 to all. Because of unusual weather this 'winter' I thought I would...
I wouldn't replant until late March - early April. It wouldn't have time to establish if you did it now. Early Spring.
