Observations in my garden. I have never seen as many ants nests in my lawn, rockery and just everywhere! They are either tiny brown/black or bigger orange ones! It must be a good year for them.. Also despite what everyone is saying about slugs and snails this has so far been my best year as they have deserted my garden! (maybe I've spoken too soon) For example I have a beautiful hosta in my border, absolutely pristine for the first time. I keep on going to have a look. On my regular snail/slug hunts I am not finding as many... What is everyone else finding in their garden?

Loads of snails and plenty of little black ants - same as usual.

For you, the number of ants is in inverse proportion to the number of slugs. There seems to be a connection here. Perhaps the ants have the slugs and or slug eggs in their food chain.

ANTS IN THEIR MILLIONS AND A VERY FEW SLUGS, IF ANY. MY LAWN IS RUINED BY THESE TINY BROWN ANTS.

Remember though that ants aerate the soil very well and do in alot of pests. A lawn is a unbalanced ecosystem and these problems will happen.

My hostas are gradually resembling lace curtains! I always have thousands (millions?) of ants, but they don't bother me much. I think it's a pretty good year for snails, though - from their point of view!
