We have just moved to a new house and there is a rampant bamboo pushing the patio up and entwining itself in the hawthorn hedge. We have dug up as much of it from the root as we can and suspect we will need to lift the patio to do the same there but the hedge is posing more of a query as it is 7 foot tall and very well established. Any suggestions?

Oh what a pain - looks a bit like pseudasasa, but it doesn't matter what it is, really. I've never tried this, but someone told me they got rid of theirs by cutting the tops down to a thick part of the stem near the base and dripping neat Roundup into the exposed canes. Painstaking and time consuming work, but it eventually did the trick.

Someone (sorry I forget who..) advised on this a couple of weeks ago & said that you have to paint the Roundup on IMMEDIATELY when you cut the stem as the tubules that carry it to the roots close up very quickly.
