Cobnut harvest. Help! I have got wheelbarrows full of cobnuts, not sure what to do with them? Have left some out for wildlife but am at loss what to do with the rest? Any ideas?

I adore cob nuts. I am a maid of Kent and we always used to get them. They are quite costly to buy now, you are very lucky. Bathgate, they are a large creamy tasting nut grown mainly in Kent (the garden of England).

Wow and I've been to Kent. I forgot my cobnuts - again! Please send me some asap!

No problem - eat them. Just wondering if you picked them a bit too soon though. Crack one and see if its ready - they are watery and tasteless if picked too soon and I don't think they will ripen off the tree..
Bathgate perhaps you've heard of hazelnuts? Same thing.

I will wait until the rest has fallen off the tree, got a lot more coming! I will put some out at the end of my drive to share the harvest with villagers.

I'll be down there pronto Amsterdam! There is a place in Canterbury, by the station which sells everything grown or raised locally. I must go down again for some cob nuts!

European Filberts, Common Filbert, etc.) produce filberts, but they technically are all hazelnuts. Now to further confuse the issue, some varieties of hazels grown in Britain are called “cobnuts”. This was based on a game kids used to play with the nuts where the winning nut was called the cob.

Steragram-that's interesting! We learn something new every day.

Whenever I find them in the hedgerows they are always empty. Perhaps the squirrels are very quick to take the good ones.

...what would I not do for a cobnut?

Cobnuts are lovely roasted or baked on the oven and added for instance to pastry for a nutty flavour or I add it to my muesli. Any other suggestions??

Feverfew- this tree has not been discovered by local squirrels yet! Don't have them in my garden and have only seen 2 grey ones in 10 years.

I just looked Amsterdam as I have a few, and I mean a few. I also have a couple growing and walnuts too. The squirrels bury them in pots in the polytunnel and some have sprouted. This website tells you all about them.
