Welcome, Penny!
It's Hildadorissen, and the caterpillar is a hornworm. When they are done eating their favored host plant, they crawl around on the ground looking for a sheltered spot with soft dirt where they can burrow in and metamorphose. The next spring, they will emerge as hawk moths--a large moth built like a stealth fighter--and whir around pollinating night blooming flowers and laying eggs. One of those hair-pulling pests that is beneficial in the adult stage!
