Phlox subulata has spread madly ... should it be cut back or would that mean losing the flowers? Thanks.

what ever you cut off will lose flowers. I usually do mine after flowering.
if you do it now you may get some of the off cuts to root to make new plants.

Obviously you would lose the flowers from the bits you remove, but the rest should flower ok.
