I would be very grateful for another ID ... this seems to be taking over the borders. Thank you.

Thanks Owd, but I’m afraid not. I do know jack by the h and sometimes see it elsewhere in the garden.

they remind me of some of the Brunnera leaves but also some of the cultivated violet types.

Maybe I’ll wait and see if they flower, but they’re really getting too big! Thank you Eileen 🙂.

Sheila, I used the Google camera button and it tries to find a similar item. Eileen's thought of Brunnera or Viola species came up funnily enough.
Hope you manage to get an I.D.

Thanks Kate. Well I don’t have Brunnera in the garden, but I do have some Violas … much smaller though!

Annoying in that I know the leaves!

me too Owd.
How big are the leaves? do they have any hairs/bristles etc.

About two inches across, quite smooth.

They look a lot like my wild violets.

Many thanks Klahanie and Penny ... they are certainly happy and spreading like mad :)

I have started to dig this monster out, and it has deep roots with little bulbils on them. I have filled three trugs so far and there’s plenty more! It’s the worst problem I’ve had in this newish garden because there are some huge clumps strangling plants that I want to keep. It’s going to be a busy week …

Looks like wild violets to me, probably white ones.

Thanks Cinderella. If you’re right, they would be welcome, but there are so many really invasive clumps where I’d rather plant something else.
Do you grow wild violets yourself?

Hi Sheila,, they used to invade my garden where I used to live, also the wild blue ones, but I pulled out most of them as they spread so much. White ones are larger. I do like them, especially the scent of the cultivated ones that I remember when I was growing up.

Thanks Cinderella, that’s interesting.

« Planted a Butternut Squash seed & hey presto a plant has grown ,about 3” high...
If the leaves have a vague garlic scent then it could well be Jack by the Hedgerow, aka Garlic mustard.
