Apples
By Stef
My apples have got brown/black spots all over them. These become very soft. I wondered if anyone had any ideas?

Sounds like Common scab. This is very bad this year, probably down to the weather. They are edible but they need to be peeled. If you leave them too long then the spots go deeper and deeper into the fruit. We have just picked about 30 kilos of James Grieve apples, all of them scabbed. We will peel them ,cook them to a puree and freeze them for winter use.
Next season spray the tree from fruit set onwards with Copper sulphate or Dithane if you do not mind chemicals
