hi all....i'm thinking of buying some wisteria to cover a pergola...only thing is that it will not get much direct sunlight, possibly 3 hrs at the most in summer.will this have a detremental effect on the blooming of flowers that this vine produces.also it would be planted in clay soil.
any answers would be much appreciated

With that little sun, I don't think wisteria would be happy. Hoenysuckle, on the other hand, will relish those conditions and give you scent as well

Advice I was given from a proffesion gardener, if you buy Wisteria make sure its grafted and in flower when buying as if its a cutting or from seed it can take years it also flower if pruned each year twice a year so I ve been told. I have one lovely leaves no flowers for 13 years I ve had it now.

Make sure you check its grafted as I know some will say they are but they are not.

Hi Shadydappler....I think your Wisteria would flower better with more sun. I moved mine from shade to full sun as it produced very healthy leaves but no flower buds. I know they can be a little bit temperamental, sometimes taking quite a few years to flower, my first one took 7 years to bloom.....by this time though the vine had reached into the sunlight.
