I'm a novice gardener, but from this forum it appears I also have a dead cordyline. Should I go with the gardeners world option and cut it right down to the base - seems drastic.

Thanks John & Beattie - Cut down and hoping for growth in the future. I knew it was dead by the smell it began to give off when taking it to the tip in the car ;-(

Have a good look at the trunk, looking for soggy, weeping, rotten areas. You need to cut the trunk off below the lowest of these.
Is that an area of rot just above ground level? If so, yes to your question, cut it down and hope it regrows from the roots.
