I have just bought an acer tree (dwarf) and is in a pot with 50% ericaciuos compost and 50% john Innes no3.I usually feed my plants every 6 weeks with bonemeal or blood fish and bone every 6 weeks. Can you feed acers with this type of feed? If not whats the best feed for acers?

I have two surviving out of three acers in the border, Im ashamed to say I dont give them any particular feed just a general scattering of chicken pellets around the garden. One tip though keep them out of draughts as they are likely to have dried up leaf tips if in a draughty position! I lost one that was in a raised bed beside a very large phormium I suspect that the phormium had taken all the water out of the bed when we had a very dry spell while we were away.

I feed our Acers with Sequestrine - it's the best feed for acid-loving plants.

Our Acers are in the ground in slightly acidic soil and are never fed. Right now one is less than happy too much strong wind!

Sheila you do not need to use sequestrine if your soil is already acidic or even neutral.

Thanks Moon grower . . . our soil is alkaline/neutral, so (although I rarely remember to feed anything), I occasionally do so thinking it will give them a boost. They look happy, but there's no way of knowing whether they'd be happy anyway!

I have two or three Acers in pots. all I do is add a general granular fertiser once a month and spray bug killer especially early on in April and May. I have had these Acers in the same pots for more than ten years now and all is well. I fleece them for protection in the winter.
