is there anything that can be grown or spread around the garden to keep cats away, and prevent them using the garden as their established toilet

Hello Ian.
If you do a site search under "Cats!" or maybe just click the link as I did when you scroll down the page where you've posted yr question, you find some good tips from Sodapopklc and others on this subject. Good luck.

HI THERE, WE HAVE HAD THE SAME PROBLEM. MY LOCAL NURSERY TOLD ME TO BUY A PLANT CALLED SCARDY CAT AND PLACE THEM AROUND. I HAVE BROUGHT ONE AND TRIED IT OUT IN THE FRONT GARDEN WHERE IT WAS A PLACE THE LOCAL CATS SEEMED TO BE ATTRACTED TO AS IT IS PEBBLED. QUESS WHAT. IT HAS WRRKED NO MORE LITTER IN FRONT. SO NOW WE WILL GET SOME MORE AND SPREAD AROUND ALL THE GARDEN.THEY SEEM TO HATE THE SMELL.WE HAVE IT IN A POT RATHER THAN IN GROIND SO WE CAN MOVE ABOUT. GOOD LUCK

Hi Ian, you can buy this green jelly stuff from B & Q, Homebase ect, i think it is called 'keep off' and i have found that really effective. again i think it is to do with the smell, it has quiet a strong smell, that is actually quite nice, but obvioulsy cats don't think so lol. good luck nothing more anoying than other peoples cats usuing your garden for such purposes.

We have the same problem and we have found that chopped up lemon peel seems to work they dont seem to like the smell of citrus

probably nicer than my idea

I heard that a plastic bottle filled with water would deter them, just left standing where they can see it.
My sister has tried and reckons it works. Cheap enough to try.

This old chestnut!! It tends to pop up every now and then. There isn't much you can do to deter a cat from using the garden as a toilet. I have 3 cats that are definitely defective!! they use my garden to do their business! Their natural instinct is to dig, drop then cover so if you do something that will prevent them doing this then that will help. In my beds I have laid some chicken wire just under the soil where the plants haven't covered the earth yet to prevent them digging and this seems to help. If I'm outdoors and I catch them, a very powerful water pistol is a great deter. Also if you have a shrubbery you could pop a litter tray under it, they will use this rather than your garden, empty it once a week, a lot of hassle but better than sticking your hand in a pile of poo whilst planting.

"pile of poo while planting". Yuck, but very neatly put. Pesky pussies.

like i said andrea put a mulch on they cant dig through easy like broken slate

Yes Noseypotter you can in some cases put broken slate over a garden for protection, especially if you are spot planting larger specimen plants and landscaping, however if you have bulbs and other perennials that grow from ground level in herbaceous borders each year then you are putting a solid barrier over the soil and that will in some cases prevent growth if you use slate. With chicken wire the bulbs and other plants can grow up through the holes and it is less restrictive than slate, you can even put a light covering of bark chippings over the top which wouldn't restrict growth of plants under the soil. Each garden is different so as many suggestions as possible will be helpful to Ian

My neighbour soaks used teabags in Jeyes fluid and scatters them around his garden. He says cats hate the smell, so I shall give it a try.

if you use enough of these bottles, teabags chicken wire etc there wont be any room left for cats in your garden

those last comments have given me a good laugh : ))
I do think Jeyes fluid is going a bit far, but interesting to see what people try - personally I'd rather catch a niff of some flower or other, or just that lovely earth smell.

Water pistols sound most fun.
