I planted tulip bulbs today and then heard on TV, just as I was passing, someone say tulips should not be planted until after the first frost. Did I hear correctly and if so, what is the reason? (The packet said plant from August onwards.)

Well I normally plant bulbs in September and they've grown OK. I wouldn't worry, they'll probably grow just the same.

They will be fine. Last year I had a terrific display of tulips with ruffled like edges, and this years tulips have already gone in.

After the first frost you might have a bit of trouble digging holes for them. It will be like trying to dig up concrete. You will need a jackhammer to make the holes.

Some Tulips will start to grow if the weather is mild - so if planted now, leaves will be out by mid October and as the weather will be cold till April they will not grow properly and will not flower. It is therefore better to wait till November to avoid false starts and wasted Tulip bulbs.

While I have now planted most of my spring bulbs, I wait for the temperatures to drop as tulips may get a fungal disease called tulip blight -Botrytis tulipae if planted too early. So not till November will I start to plant them.

Tulips have been known to rot if planted into warm soil, so we usually wait until November to plant ours. I would expect the soil to be cool enough already in the UK, though. Most varieties will spend several weeks growing roots before they try to send up shoots, and by that time the air temps should be cold enough to inhibit the growth of the shoots before they reach the surface.

Thanks, all, for the feedback. Ironically, the reason I put them in early was because I bought tulip bulbs quite late last year and never got them planted because of the frost!

Isn't it wonderful? There are really useful bits of information out there that I didn't realise I needed to know so haven't asked myself! Can I thank people for replies to other peoples' questions?

We plant our tulips in September and have never had a problem. I think it depends in part where you live. For us it is definitely autumn now whilst in the south it is still the tail end of summer.

Yes, MG, it is certainly autumn here, too. And, now all should be well with my tulip bulbs - we had our first ground frost this morning!

Tulip blight risk is greater, that's why they say it - but to be honest, if you're planting lots of other bulbs, it's much easier to do them all at once, otherwise, as happened to you Ojibway, they may not get planted at all, and most of the time, there's not a problem.
