Can any one explain why daffs., that have been coming up around the pond for about 3 or 4 year, have not come up this year?

i agree with doctorbob, the wet summer and very cold winter will see some of them off. is the area around the pond liable to flooding?

Another possibility is Narcissus fly. The maggot of a bee like insect lives inside a bulb and basically kills it.
