sprouting potatoes
middlesex, United Kingdom
we have left our potatoes too long before looking at them.they now have shoots about a foot long coming out of them. Do we break them off, are the pots any good? don't know what to do with them!

I'm also cultivating potatoes this year for the first time. Mine had produced lots of shoots whilst in storage. After some research, I removed most of the longer ones, leaving only 3 on each tuber, which should produce larger (altho fewer) potatoes. Best of Luck!

This happened to Monty Don on Gardener's World this week.. He snapped of the longest ones and left the small shoots on. He then planted them up. I only grew potatoes for the 1st time last year, great success, I'll definately be growing them again this year. Good luck with yours.
