when do i cut backdaffodill foliage after flowering

Answers

You really don't want to cut it back if possible as the leaves, left to yellow, will provide the food store they need to flower the following year. If you must cut them back at least wait till six weeks have passed, that's generally the consensus, but the longer the better.

Just pick off thye faded flowers and seed pod that is forming behind the flower. Leave the leaves as Balcony says, dont tie them up as your gran used to as they need all the energy going back into the bulb through the leaves to put on a good show next year.

A little feed at this time helps the bulb for next year too

what type of feed is best would chicken pellets do them moongrower?

No chicken pellets wont be good for the bulb at all as they are high in nitrogen. Something like a liquid tomato feed is what we use - though we don't feed the bulbs in the garden much just the ones in pots... Bulbaholic says you can also use bonemeal forked in lightly around the area the bulbs are in.

I have just been listening to the Brodie Castle gardener on this subject and he says that the six week rule is just an old wives tale and that the leaves should not be cut back before they have yellowed and died.

I plant mostly miniture daffs like Tete a Tete these days because the leaves are nowhere near as long as the full sized ones and are so much tidier as you wait for them to die down. They're just as pretty too I think :-)

I quite agree with you, Bulbaholic, & that's what I've always done with my Daffs - any kind of bulb for that matter as well.

Sid, I also grow the mini-daffs Tete-a-Tete & have had them on my balcony for several years. I have a standard Fuchsia & a Camelia underplanted with them. In fact my wife bought a potful in bloom a few weeks ago & once all the flowers had died I took the bulbs out of their pot & put them in with the others under the Camelia. :)

You will find photos of them in the My Garden page.
