Why has my purple aubrietia suddenly developed a large hole in clump
Essex, United Kingdom
I have grown aubrietia for many years cascading over my wall. I have noticed for the first time this year a clump missing. I wondered if children or a person who wanted a bit for propagation had pulled it out, but on inspection, it does look a bit as if a creature had maybe bitten through the stems. I have loads of snails living under the aubrietia on the bricks of the wall, but they have never caused a problem in nearly 20 years, so I am mystified, but the hole has made the display very messy.

Possibly the snails, aubretia can also just die back for no apparent reason - at least one of ours does. Mice can also take a fancy to nibbling plants

Well, if it was around here, I'd say a passing deer had taken a mouthful. It happens all the time. However, where you are, I don't know if you get many passing deer.
