Crikey...looks like some sort of peony coming up

My thoughts indeed - Looks strange, there was a peony there last year, but we were new to the house...

Definitely peony - maybe a tree peony, they tend to be taller

Definitely a paeony - mine looks the spitting image of this at the moment.

It is a paeony, looks rathe like P. cambessedesii. Tree paeonies are not herbacious and new growth would be coming from last years stems.
