Thanks Bulb . I thought it looked like a dead nettle but I don't recall seeing a yellow one before

I know it as yellow archangel - the silver marbling on the leaves makes it quite attractive and it's useful ground cover under trees.

I remember theses yellow ones from my childhood in North Norfolk not seen them since, just the white ones.

I live close to the Norfolk border (near Sutton Bridge at the southern end of The Wash)

I lived near Kings Lynn and remember Sutton Bridge as it did actually have an iron bridge does it still?

I was wondering if you meant the plant, or the resident caterpillar! : )

Caterpillar's wrapped round the third group of flowers down - well camoflaged, I had to look for it. Well spotted, Tug! :-)

when it is happy it is a rampant thug. There are a range of them I have Lamium galeobdolen[?spelling]Hermans pride.

The yellow archangel used to be a common sight on verges here in Sussex, but, like most wildflowers, is far less common than before. I like to see it and if it appeared in my garden I would happily keep a clump, bearing in mind Seaburngirl's warning!

Sorry to correct you Bulba but Yellow Rattle is different and is rhinanthus crista-galli. It has unstalked quite narrow and very serrated leaves and is semi parasitic on grass roots.
Yellow archangel (this one) is galeobdalon luteum, with wider stalked leaves. The vairiegated variety of this is the one often recommended for shady areas but is a right pain as you will well know,as it spreads everywhere with runners even though it is so pretty.
