I bought four kinds of hosta's from a bargain shelf in rather poor condition tail end of last year , they are doing great this year , can they be split ? or can I increase my stock from them somehow?

Any time from now on, even when in full leaf, but yes, wait until at least next year.

Split them next Spring if you need more, you can see the small shoots then. I leave mine for about 3 years 'til they are wanting to get out of the pot!! See my 'photos, my small garden is almost all hostas, Page 6.

If you only bought them late last year I'd leave them along to become established this year and then start splitting next year.
