August Planting Query
Hi, I've just cleared my very neglected garden and it's looking quite bare. Aside from bedding plants, what would I be able to start growing in August? I'm looking to prettily fill space (preferably with hardy perennials that will look after themselves for a while to come!) and also grow some fruit/veg. I have only pots on decking, with a long trellised area. I also have a huge number of slugs/snails that decimate most things I attempt to grow! I'd very much appreciate some suggestions please. Thanks.

You could plant almost any of the perennials or shrubs. Obviously some will not flower this year and they will be planted with next year in mind but there is also a good selection of plants that will give you colour now and in the autumn.
Have a walk around a good big garden centre and you will have an enormous choice. Everyone's preferences are different so just have a look and see what you like.
And of course keep any new plants very well and regularly watered.

Yes, I can't understand why there are flower shows in August as its a sort of inbetween month. I have some phlox in the garden - 4 different shades of pink or white which have been in bloom for a couple of weeks now, also agapanthus and butterfly gladioli (which I wouldn't have chosen but were a gift) but they are beautiful colours and really brighten up the borders. I am inundated with Japanese anemones which have taken over somewhat this year.
