My Tree Paeony has made me so happy.

I came home from a visit to my daughter today. I managed to get to visit Spitzhenrys’ Open Day last week and met her for the first time in the flesh, also Sheilabub and Tetra and their OH’s. I had a lovely time. I got a wonderful surprise when I spied this first flower. I have waited a long time to see this paeony flower. I love it. It is pure white with a cone of pink in the centre and lots of golden stamens. My other one has a dark blotch at the centre end of each petal.
I’d be pleased to find out which paeony this is because I bought it so long ago that the label has gone. I had a look at a couple of sites to see if it would jog my memory but nothing seems exactly like it. It has a 20cm wide flower. It is beautiful.
Sarah Bernhard just flowers and flowers for weeks on end.She is also a brilliant cut flower. I get masses of flowers each year.
Bowl of Beauty caught my eye because it has a huge golden centre when it is fully open. I always think it looks a bit over the top colour wise but I still like it. It lasts well too. I have the ordinary red peony which seems to burst in to life with a shout saying “look at me” and then disappears in the first puff of wind.

Bjs was saying it can take up to 7 years to flower so I have just had to be patient. I bought 2 at the same time. They were both in pots. The other one flowered last year so I thought it would be safer planted in the ground. It has made a lot of growth but no flowers this year. I know it is said they do not like to be moved so like you it has to be a maybe next year. I am going to have to plant this one in the ground too as it has more than grown out of the pot it is in. I just hope it does not set it back. Keep your fingers crossed it will flower one day.

I planted three Sarah Bernhardts this year. They're coming on really well, but I'm prepared to be patient for the flowers!!!

Thank you all for joining in my pleasure. I thought I might miss this one as the peony are famous for having the shortest lives of any flower. It was the best surprise because I have been nursing a tingling excitement for weeks since I first discovered the flower bud. Got it in one Sticki I can't help smiling. We all thoroughly enjoyed meeting as it so nice to put a face to a name Stroller and Grandmage. Photos look fine but a bit like passport photos really. I had my grandchildren along and I could have done without them as they rushed around as if they were never allowed out and I seemed to be asking "Have you seen the children" more often than any other question. Sheilabub and her OH took wonderful photos of some parts of the garden and Tetra wrote a lovely blog about it. Do have a look at their blogs. Angie take a look at Kelways they do a wonderful range of peony. I have never seen a pure white one before so I am more than a little pleased. My husband laughed at me going in to raptures over it because I used to say i did not like white flowers but I have quite a few in the garden and they do complete the colour scheme. My Sarah Bernhardstarted flowering in the year following planting Donna so you may not have too long a wait to enjoy this very pretty peony.

Oh, so this is where you put the photo! I went to your photo page, and it wasn't there.
Well done, tree paeony, for opening to welcome Scotsgran home. :-)
I had my first flowers this year too - mine turned out to be yellow. They don't last long, I agree, but they are lovely. I hope you find the name.

Thanks Spritz. This has been an exceptional year for flowers on shrubs and trees as well as in the herbaceous borders. Cordylynes seem to have been wiped out by last winter and yet the other plants are bloomimg wonderfully. I did buy a yellow paeony years ago but it did not survive. It was the first time that I realised that there was more to paeonies than just the dark red ones seen everywhere in early summer.

i think tree paeonies are one of the treasures of an english garden; scotsgrans must be extra special cos it flowers for her home coming!!
if you could sell those ~ with flowers opening exactly for an event you would make a fortune ~ but better still you would make a lot of people happy

I'm lucky Sticki I was born happy. I suppose that means I was also born lucky and when I look around me I am very grateful for what I have.
I rarely do the lottery but feel tempted once in a while. My worst nightmare would be winning millions. i think no matter how hard you try that kind of luck always seems to have a down side for someone.

This is very attractive ,the centre is not at all what you expect from Peony,at first glance i thought i was looking at a Magnolia flower. Have you tried Binny plants for Identification,It will probably take a couple of hours to go through the list.it will certainly wet your appetite for more.

Good idea Bjs. When I first spotted the flower from a distance I thought it was a Clematis but I could not remember having one that size and colour. I have been searching for a name and the closest I think is maybe "White Wings". I bought it 2 in a packet from Costco a long time ago. I will need to pay Billy a visit and see if he can identify it for me as his nursery is only a few miles from me. Unfortunately our garden is very exposed to a west wind made a lot worse by the building of a huge house to the south and west of us which is ruining even the hardiest of my plants. The wind instead of being carried up and over the previous bungalow is now channelled past the new house before bouncing off ours and becomes an east wind before hitting the east side of their house and bouncing back across our garden again. It is a nightmare. I am having to completely redesign the garden. This plant is in a pot on the east side of the house and I may plant it in the ground there. As I was searching I came across an intersting fact that you should plant tree paeonies at least 4" below the join in the stem or flowering can be delayed. I wonder if this has anything to do with the problem I and others have had in getting them to flower.

being content as you are SG is truly a wonderful thing. i think i used to be more like that ~ wish i still was.
i can see the likeness to magnolia Bjs ~ hope you sort out which one it is and your garden gets sorted ~ sounds very complicated.

What colour is yours Sanbaz? This seems to have been a very good year for first time flowering or maybe we are all keen on the tree paeony because it was being promoted that year. I find some plants are heavily promoted to follow fashion in the garden.

mine was white also and similar to yours, think your right there to, i also prefere the tree peony to the bigger pom pom flower peonys.

Sanbaz, I have trawled through your photos and found your Paeony, posted 11th May 2011, which could be the twin of mine. How exciting is that. If we both have one there is a chance that some other Goy member will have one too and know its name. I will put it on as a question tomorrow. I have been away for nearly two weeks and it came out shortly after I left home according to OH. Today we have had more heavy rain and an east wind, that has put an end to it, so got home just in time to enjoy it briefly. I

You are lucky to have your peony in flower. I have had a tree peony in a large pot for three years now, nothing! no flower and very little growth. May be next year!
