Suntrap Garden Open Day

For those who live within travelling distance of Edinburgh Airport you might want to put Suntrap Garden on your list of places to visit. The groups who meet at this garden have been volunteering to keep the garden open over the weekends over the summer and sell plants grown in the centre. It is open from 10.30am to 4pm Sat and Sunday. I have just had an email from John Smith regarding their Open Day in May. I copy it for you with his permission and would also advise a visit to the web site.
NEWS FROM OATRIDGE COLLEGE/SUNTRAP GARDEN
DATE: SUNDAY 23 May 2010 – 10.30 am to 4.00 pm
Suntrap – Scotland’s hidden gem bursts into life.
One of the finest gardens in Scotland “Open Day” on Sunday 23 May 2010 between 10.30 am and 4.00 pm.
This remarkable haven of tranquillity and stunning horticultural collections once again invites the general public to view its collection at the height of its beauty.
Established in 1957 by wealthy philanthropist George Boyd Anderson, it has long been considered one of Scotland’s finest gardens and yet is unknown even to the keenest gardener.
As well as showcasing its excellent planting, a truly sensual sensory garden and a delightful setting the open day boasts many ‘extras’ to add a further dimension:
- Guided Garden Tours
- Garden Advice
- New Pavilion housing the Scottish Bonsai National Collection
- Fairtrade Stall on behalf of One World
- Plant Sales
- Eubee, a snowy owl and Hakuna, an African Spotted Eagle Owl
- Teas and Coffees with home baking provided by the Friends of Suntrap
- Garden games and Treasure trail for both adults and children

At only £2 for adults and £1 for children (Proceeds to Perennial, Gardeners’ Royal Benevolent Society).
It’s the only place to be.

For further information contact John Smith, Curriculum Team Leader, Suntrap Garden by email suntrap@btopenworld.com or by telephone on 0131 339 7283.

Directions: Suntrap sits between the A8, RBS headquarters and the Park and Ride at Heriot Watt University on the A71. Car parking free.

There is plenty of parking should you visit any day of the week and on Open Day there is extra parking provided. This three acre garden deserves to be better known. If the name George Boyd Anderson rings a bell it may be because you are aware that he was involved with setting up the Edinburgh Ski Slope which is visible from the city bypass.
NB on Open Day this is not free to NTS members. There is an honesty box for use by anyone who cares to donate should you visit on other days. I attend a gardening group there once a month and have just started the Basic Gardening course once a week. Details on the web site.

This looks really interesting SG! I shall consult my diary, but it sounds like a place not to be missed even if I can't get there on the open day. Thanks for the blog! Hope the course is enjoyable and informative. Just off to look up the website now....

Sorry Karens I should have put that in. Thank you for the info. Unfortunately I will not be able to be there on the Open day but I am on volunteer duty from 10.30am to 4pm on Sunday July 4th. I will be very pleased to see any Goy members then. I will wear my badge for you. Plants for sale but no teas that day I'm afraid. We do not yet have enough volunteers to do that at the moment. Hi Csarina, This is a nice neutral way of meeting other members. I'm only sorry we have something else on that day so I cannot attend. I'm glad you mentioned it earlier as it has already whetted peoples desire to meet others.
