Quiz time !

Every year at this time we attempt the local Rotary quiz, and Shirley tulip (among others) enjoys helping out. The theme for these cryptic questions is “Sports and Games”.

1. Julius Caesar says he’s playing (4)
2. Knock over Knight Rider’s car less often (8)
3. Don’t let anyone else do it (8)
4. Did young Ellis really start this? (5)
5. Usually found in a pathless bit of ocean (11)
6. This orb is for 10 items or fewer at the checkout (10)

If you can solve any, please PM me so that others can keep trying. Quite tricky this year :)

Sheila

Hywel has sent me an excellent answer for 6 :)

Looking forward to more!

Thanks Sheila, I love the quiz you put on at this time of year! PM on the way to answers for 2 and 6.

I cant fathom any of it. J. C. played the violin.

Excellent answers from Shirley and Meadowland . . . thank you. Some more tricky ones for fun:

7. One too far (6)
8. Great for those who like wearing coloured jerseys (7)
9. This kid fights (6)
10. Receptacles for French puddings (6)
11. What did Barbie’s friend Ken do to defend himself? (5)
12. Takeaway pizza or Bond girl’s (8)

Good luck.

I think it helps if you like crosswords Diane :)

I'm useless at cryptic clues, but good luck to anyone who tries!

30 Nov, 2018

Just in case these are keeping anyone awake (as I was), here are the answers to the first six as kindly provided by Hywel, Meadowland and Shirley.

1. Ludo, 2. Skittles, 3. Charades or Monopoly, 4. Rugby, 5. Battleships, 6. Basketball.

Thank you very much for all your contributions!

Just in case your brains want a further work-out:

13. 4 inch sphere (8)
14. How a bamboo eater attacks (4,2)
15. American mom on the school run (6)
16. Sounds as if a thick jumper protects against these
(8)
17. It's what bad rapids deserve (8)

30 Nov, 2018

Thanks Sheila ... they are getting harder to answer!

30 Nov, 2018

M'land, it's definitely the questions! Still fun to attempt them .....

30 Nov, 2018

That's an excellent idea ... Sheila must suggest the idea to the Rotary Club!

1 Dec, 2018

Hmmm - I think we’re lucky to get it every December . . . there must be a lot of work compiling it, and they only charge £1 for a copy :)

1 Dec, 2018

That's value for money!

2 Dec, 2018

I used to like crosswords, havent done them for ages.
Like playing lone Scrabble. So what has Ludo got to do with Julius Caesar ?

3 Dec, 2018

According to Shirley’s daughter, Ludo is Latin for “I play” . . . we have some very bright people on this site! Luckily!

3 Dec, 2018

Sorry Julia, we’re just back from hospital, very tired. I will write again tomorrow, but 16 is Draughts ... very clever from Shirley!

4 Dec, 2018

We don’t get the answers from Rotary until January. But Shirley and family suggest the following:

13. Softball
14. Kung Fu
15. Marathon

I’m grateful, as I can’t think of anything better!

5 Dec, 2018

Thanks Meadowland - that does sound right. Apart from No.17, we just have two more that we can't solve:

18. The ancient Greeks did it in the nude (10)
19. The ball is hidden from sight, hopefully (7)

Well done to everyone for some tricky solving!

6 Dec, 2018

Meadowland, I agree with Handball and not Softball as my OH suggested! He is the sports fan, not myself, and has been a big help with these questions.

Sheila, PM on the way with possible correct answers for 18 and 19!!

6 Dec, 2018

M'land, Have sent you a PM.

6 Dec, 2018

OH has solved No.17 "It's what bad rapids deserve" . . . answer, SHOOTING . . . obvious when you know!

And I now think No. 3 might be Patience (Clue was "Don't let anyone else do it").

I thought we'd finished, but haven't yet solved
20. The East could be where the hidden things are found (12)

Any ideas gratefully received :)

15 Dec, 2018

Sheila, a rather overdue PM on the way!

15 Dec, 2018

When people are white water rafting, Julia, they "shoot" the rapids . . .

16 Dec, 2018

Sheila, we have 8 unsolved from the 100 on the quiz question list! Lots of answers were anagrams weren't they?

22 Dec, 2018

Yes they were, Shirley. If you would like to know what we put as answers for your missing 8, just tell me the numbers. I like anagrams but I thought the rest were quite tricky . . . but I’m a sucker for cryptic crosswords so long as they’re not TOO erudite: what about you?

22 Dec, 2018

Sheila, since posting that comment we are now left with four unsolved. They are numbers 9, 20, 36 and 97. I like crosswords with both cryptic and 'normal' clues, that way I can choose from one or both!

22 Dec, 2018

9. Cluedo (consecutive words in the clue)
20. Croquet (chef’s hat is a toque)
36. Parkour
97. Didn’t your OH say Marathon? No other ideas.

In haste, OH serving breakfast!

23 Dec, 2018

I hope the Sunday breakfast was good Sheila! We just returned from visiting Mum (she was asleep!) and then braved the supermarket for a few items. Very, very busy in there.

Now then, we were both cross with ourselves for not seeing Cluedo, we had to look up the word for a chef's hat and still didn't get the answer. Not come across Parkour before and Marathon is the answer to 91, a really old Snicker, which still leaves 97 ... sooo frustrating!

23 Dec, 2018

Apparently the organisers have said that there could be two identical answers (in other words, just because Marathon is right for 91, it could still be used elsewhere). I know that doesn't help a bit!

23 Dec, 2018

:o)))
