Weeding...the other side of the fun.

When its warm in summer, and the plants are off and growing, you start to forget the spring time explosion of weedy plants…the (here) South African Veldt grasses- a living hell of a grass-lol,the Bermuda grass, and all the others. Milkweeds..I sort of hate to pull them out. I know they are important to the native insects. But,they get big and fast. Shading plants and creating rot. Out they go. I hope the empty lot of an acre next door picks up the slack.
Other weeds I have in abundance…Mallows..love disturbed soils. And I’m always creating great disturbances with all my planting and moving around!..this time of year Mallow grows a carrot like roots. I can only pull them out also this time of year because the ground is soft. Once a California summer sets in- you can’t pull nothing out of the ground. You just get a few leaves for all your effort.
One very good thing…is no Roundup is needed now. Later in the season I resort to it. Cracks in the driveway..

I ventured out to have a tidy up, only stayed a few mins as its so cold, think I'm getting old, good luck with your weeding Stan....

lol,Yes,I wanted the rain.
Ster and Linc,Right now,we are heading to a magical time. That's the time when the ground is softened AND its not cold. Only in spring is that time. This year,it's early a by a bit. Some years,I put off the weeding and always live to regret it. Amazing how you can pull a 3-4' Mallow or Mustard plant out of the ground with all the tap root...once the California dry starts..forget it. The best I can do is chop it down..and hope I don't miss and hit an ornamental. In getting older,my aim I notice isn't as perfect as it was 25 years ago or even 15.
