Woodpeckers breakfast

I looked up at the birdtable this morning and saw what I thought were Mr & Mrs greater spotted woodpecker. Then just as I noticed that the second one was actually a young one (they have a red hat instead of a red scarf like Dad)Mum turned round and fed Junior a beakful of peanut bits. I have never seen woodpeckers doing this before – baby was very calm about it and didn’t do any of the fussy fluttering and begging that lots of other birds do. So sorry my camera wasn’t handy, so you will have to imagine it!

Wow that is a special moment and you have described it perfectly, it would have been good to capture with the camera but thats very often the way, we just cannot walk around with our camera`s all the time..
A sight I would have loved.....

Lovely for you. Pity no camera to hand, but that's the way it happens, either no camera, or flat battery. :o))

Yes it was great - and they were there again today! Mum has been feeding very often these past few days, but usually on her own - I think she is making up for all the lost time she spent sitting on the nest and not eating properly!

Now two days later baby is getting his own peanuts, and this afternoon he was visiting without Mum! He was also having a tentative try at pecking a tree trunk, but this seemed to be a bit too difficult for a learner. He (or she) still has fluffy baby down on his breast, and the patch under his tail which will eventually be scarlet is a lovely soft pale peachy colour. I just feel so privileged to be able to see all this without leaving the house!

How lovely to be able to watch the babe progressing, we have lots of different birds visiting our garden but never any woodpeckers, my daughter has seen them in her garden and thats only at the back of us so we know they are around.
Thankyou for the update....
