I hope you'll get there safely - they were badly affected in the floods!

Thank you everyone - disappointing you won't be there but never mind, it was a nice thought. We heard the floods had been bad round there but we are hoping for the best. Good idea Grandmage - may do that later.

It depends on which part of Exmouth you are going to. The coast and the 'colony' are low lying so would have struggled with flood water. And Withycombe Brook became a raging torrent. But other parts are on hills and will be fine.
I remember a bad flood in the town in the early 60's. We lived on a hill so had no problems, but the whole of the town centre was flooded. My brother was about six at the time and it was deep enough to come over the top of his Wellington boots, but he didn't say anything in case he got sent home!

We are going to a hotel that overlooks the dunes but is at a higher level, and quite a bit higher than the town centre. I think things would be pretty serious if it were flooded, but I guess the access roads could be a problem if it rains again- If, if....

However, there should be winter honeysuckle and aconites in the garden, and also a resident green woodpecker if he's still there.

Whereabouts are the gardens steragram? Are they open all year?

I wonder if that's the same woodpecker that I have seen in my mum's garden? She doesn't live far from there.

Is that the Devoncourt Hotel? If so, that should be safe from floods, even if the sand dunes aren't

7 Jan, 2013

Yes Andrew, its the Devoncourt, and if that got flooded it would be very serious for the lower town! Sticki, the garden belongs to the hotel, so i suppose it would be open to anyone having afternoon tea of Sunday lunch there. We have never been in the summer so I can't tell you what its like then. If i see the woodpecker I'll ask it to send our love to your Mum!

Cmsue, am sending you a PM

Spritz, I left you out - sorry! Yes, its very nice - we have been many times in January as we got a timeshare suite there very cheaply some years ago. The lease expires next year so we though we'd better make the most of it. Living further north at the time it was always a treat to spend some time in a milder climate. Now we live further south and near the sea it isn't quite the treat it used to be but it makes a nice change and we can see the sea from our room - but not near enough to hear it!
