Beam Engines Canal Boats and Windmills

Crofton Pumping Station was built in 1807 to provide water to the summit of the Kennet and Avon Canal.
The first engine to be installed was a 36inch bore Boulton and Watt, which had a wooden beam and began working in 1809.
In 1812 a 42 inch bore Boulton and Watt engine was installed beside it. In 1846 the 36 inch bore Boulton and Watt was replaced by a Sim Combined Cylinders Engine constructed by Harvey of Hayle.
Both the 1812 Boulton and Watt and 1846 Harvy Engine are still in full working condition and are in full steam regularly as we saw this weekend. After our visit here we went on to Wilton Windmill. Although it was not open we were able to walk around and have a look at the windmill
Then we went for a walk along the Kennet and Avon Canal.

It's good that these things are being looked after and kept in working order. Very interesting to see.

Canals & locks fascinate me & scare me at the same time sueb! I think it's the feeling of the dark depths & the slimy walls that appear when the water goes down!!
I went on the Kennet & Avon years ago on a barge ... a lovely day trip out.
Good photos ... thanks for an interesting blog. :o)
