From the North Face of the Eiger, to something much more manageable

At long last my back garden is beginning to look good and I am able to tend to all plants and shrubs myself, without breaking my neck. Still a lot of work to do yet and I am not sure whether some of the shrubs did not take at all. Although some of them look poorly, when I cut a small branch back just a little I can see it is still alive. So maybe they just need to adjust some more in their new location. Considering some were just bunched together against a house wall and covered with fleece all the winter, I am surprised so many survived at all. A bay laurel and a ceanothus overwintered together in a bucket of water, (I didn’t even know they were there until I saw them one winters morning) which was frozen a couple of times and they look as though they are going to make it as well. It took the landscape gardeners over 2 weeks to complete the work, in pouring November weather to construct the terraced garden where before it was so steep, even a mountain goat would have found it a challenge to climb up or down. I had to forget about planting bulbs, as the earth was so sodden for so long and only started to work on the terraces in early spring. It is still in the early stage and for now I have just put in the plants that I have kept but need to organise the terraces a bit better next year. This is just a taster, with a bit of luck I will be able to show off a bit later in the year.

Thank you all for your comments, yes it was expensive, but give me a couple of years and it will look stunning (I hope) certainly different. By the way, that's the real Titchy on my avater, an 8 year old female canary, at least I got her, as so far where we live we get so few birds and I miss that terribly. Maybe they too are waiting for my terraced garden to be more established.

Get the feeders filled, add the bird bath....with all your lovely shrubs and
plants, they will be flocking in....you will not have to wait long, those plants
will establish quite quickly, now, Summer is almost here!!!
You will have to show us some more pics. of titchy...look forward to it...

Yes it has, Cristina - must take some pics soon, but haven't spent much time in the garden of late, been so busy with a make over indoors. Still need to make some changes in the tiers, as some of the small shrubs are getting too big and will have to be moved to a higher tier later on. Its good to be back on GoY life suddenly has more meaning again and I am truly back again in body and sole.

Hello Bornagain, thank you for welcoming me back, I feel a little bit like your "name" indicates, a new fresh me and yes eager to participate in GoY and especially get my surroundings ship shape again, still lots to do but then we gardeners never finish do we. At least we've had some rain here last night and today, the first real drop since 30th March. I expect we'll say before long: wish it would stop raining. Anyway, wish you Good Gardening!

the gardens comeing on now isent it ................... how are you now !!! ;0))))

Hi Libet, I couldn't manage the garden before the work was done, when we moved here almost 3 years ago, we knew something would have to be done and we did and now it's a pleasure looking at the tiers, especially from the bedroom. It's impossible to take a picture to get the real view, even the guy who did the work came unexpectedly to see me last week and he tried to take pictures, I found him in all sorts of positions. Haven't seen the outcome yet. I did take some recent photos and sent them on a blog called "I am still learning but getting there", so things are coming along slowly.

Hello Cristina, Oh! I am so much better ~ thank you, the gardening helps immensely, seen the latest pics? On a blog. Still not satisfied completely with what I've done and still will have to move plants around. Hopefully the top Fence will be changed in the autumn, unless I spend all my money on plants, or paint come to that, as inside and outside is getting a makeover. So not enough time left for me to be sad as I am too busy - he would have wanted it to be like this.

What a fantastic job ... your new terraced garden is brilliant. It sounds like so many of your plants are going to recover just fine and what a marvellous display you'll have later on.
