Patch of ground thats been annoying me.

Down by my compost bins at the very bottom of my garden is clay.
It’s one of those areas that not a lot happens apart from the composting (actually that is quite a lot going on when you think about it), I have my wildlife pond on one side compost bins right by the fence and then there is this little area that dosen’t do anything.
Last winter I dug a trench and stuck in loads of willow whips that I cut off my willow dome, and planted a few foxgloves in front of them. That was fine as it is quite shady so woodland plants are a must. Well the fox gloves have finished and nearly set all there seeds, so I set about digging out some of the clay and replacing it with some of my compost.
Using some freshly cut wood I set about building a little raised bed that I could fill with some shade lovers.
Planted up with some primulas from elsewhere in the garden, a hosta that I have had growing from seed, some newly transplanted Pulmonaria, Ajuga, english blue bells and for the moment an a Acanthus that I have been growing from seed.
More might be added as I do some thining around the garden.

Looking good! Can I get some info here? Hosta from seed - tried it on several occasions - didn't work. What's the secret? When do I plant the seed? Under what conditions do I keep it? How long should I wait for germination? Oooh! I can see my "Hosta Avenue" in the shade of the boiler house growing larger in the future. ;o))

Nariz, it was more luck than expertise. I had collected two envelopes full of seed from four of my Hostas the other year.
Not sure of the variety or cultivars, but I sprinkled some on a seed tray, lightly covered it, sat it in some water then I had it in the green house. When they poked through the soil I thought brilliant. Cant remember how long it took. Transplanted some around the garden and left a few in pots.
Timing was probably around early spring when I sowed them, just trying to mimick nature.
Good luck.

That...T & T...is going to look fab when it's all established! Love the use of natural cuts of wood as an edging. Really nice. :0)
