Three Little Acers

Putting some food out for the birds this morning, I noticed how my three little acers have fared over the year or so since I got them.
They are all Orange Dream – purchased from local supermarket in April 2014 within a few days of each other.

I potted them on from the store pots into 4-5 inch pots straight away and they stood in a line next to my wood pile. There was nothing to choose between them as far as growth was concerned but one was a better shape for potting on to a Long Tom pot.

Pot 1

Potted on into a Long Tom with three ajuga (which didn’t survive the winter). Since potting on it has been in the shade for the most part, initially in the shade of the bricks I had stacked up for the paving, then I put it into the corner by the pond. It gets the ‘sun’ from about 10am for an hour or two. It is sheltered from wind by the hostas.

Pots 2 and 3

haven’t been potted on and are still in almost the same location (the woodpile was moved to make way for the pebble pool). They get the same amount of sun shine (12noon to approx 6-7 pm).

Pot 2

Pot 2 stands next to the waterbutt and Pot 3 has been up against the house wall – so it will get some reflected heat from the brickwork and slightly less rain.

You wouldn't think they were the same variety would you? they all look very healthy.

Yes, as Stera says...they look different. No. 3 certainly looks autumnal, already!
My dark red Acer, all of a sudden, a week or so back, lost all its glow in the leaves and, I noticed another one of the same sort in a garden around the corner has done exactly the same thing! Strange.

i used to have an acer about 8 feet tall, but lost it a couple of years ago because of all the wet weather we were experiencing

I love Acers. They are great for small gardens and the leaves don't cut out the sun as much as most trees. The colour in the autumn is such a bonus too.
