I haven't grown coleus for yonks, must give them a go again. As Shahida says, they are easy to grow and come in so many shades and patterns. I must suggest them to my daughter too, she is just starting out as a novice gardener with her own garden.
Enjoy your coleus, ydd, I'm sure you will.

My Dad used to grow loads of coleus from seeds and used to have a real lot of them from one packet of seeds, which made it very cheap, because I believe they are annuals aren't they, so can't be kept for more than one year.

Hi Daisy! I've just this year grown coleus from seed for the 1st time and they are great fun! They don't show their colours until they get their first set of true leaves, then the whole tray will go multicoloured!

Those are an excellent size, OH has grown ours from seed this year and they are not as large as yours, I have grown them now for a couple of years, as I mix them in with the jungle plants.....we bought one from our local GC as I wanted a particular colour a small plug and it took off, will show you a pic tomorrow.

Some very good plug plants you've got yourself there, Ydd! I've grown them many times over the years, they are sooo easy to grow! I once planted them out in my garden here in the UK - over 30 years ago. At that time you didn't see them in people's gardens. You might see them in park gardens planting schemes but they looked too exotic I think for people to try them in their gardens - rather like Busy Lizzies really. Both were considered indoor plants! Remembering the Busy Lizzies they used to be only the very bright pink leggy variety. But when I put them in the garden I found they didn't get as tall as when in the house even when they were in a sunny window all their lives!

I like to see the flowers on these plants - though I do admit they look ugly when they start to go over. You just cut them off when they start to lose their charming appeal. I find they even self seed on the windowsill even when no bee can get at them!

I used to grow big plants in small pots when we lived in Spain. We lived, at that time, on a 5th floor flat & I had them growing on an outside windowsill. To stop them from falling off & down into the street below I fixed a wooden bar across the the windowsill. One summer's day, a Sunday, we went to my parents-in-law's house for lunch. While we were there we had a thunderstorm. When we got back home I saw the wooden bar had broken & the plants had fallen into the street below! Fortunately nobody was hurt! I often remember this & I'd have loved to see it happen! I imagine they would have floated down rather than fallen as the plants were very big & the pots very small. I gave them fertilizer which made the grow big while being in small pots.
