Yunnan - Land of the Southern Cloud (3)

We had two nights at another homestay, perched on the side of the valley

We had time for a quick look at the homestay’s village before moving on

Beside the road grew lilium brownii

A wonderful little gesneriad, corallodiscus lanuginosus, grew on rocks at our next botanising stop

While impatiens arguta grew beside a wet ditch

I also liked impatiens xanthina, but it is not listed in Plant Finder

Did you recognise houttuynia cordata? We usually grow the variety ‘Chameleon’ with coloured leaves

Although the scenery was stunning, the towns left a lot to be desired

We started to drive up a side road but one of the vehicles hit a problem. The ever resourceful local guide organised a replacement vehicle within half an hour

We were now climbing to see more rhododendrons such as rhododendron edgeworthii

Rhododendron neriiflorum

Rhododendron arisanum

Rhododendron arizelum

And rhododendron mekongense

In a wet gully, we discovered primula dryadifolia

As we climbed, the views were magnificent

But snow on the path finally meant we had to turn back later at a major blockage

To be continued ….

Just look at those plants growing wild! I'd feel like one of those collectors of plants for stately homes. Some areas look bleak; quite a contrast.

What an amazing trip!

An amazing journey, that last picture of the 'road' looks very scary.
China is very different culturally. My OH's daughter & young family were in Ningbo, Zhejiang for 2 1/2 yrs, they just came back this year.

GF - we subsequently found out two locals died on that path a few days before we used it. I'm glad we didn't know that BEFORE we walked on it.

The 'road' looks to be gone, Andrew, more like wide edge with shale.

GF - yes, this is the old road, so is no longer maintained. Some of the old roads over the passes were only shale tracks in any case.

Beautiful scenery but gosh you took your lives into your hands didn't you, it looks very dangerous in parts and yes very bleak in places but wonderful seeing all the plants and shrubs in their natural surroundings..
