Good Things Come In Threes

First, good service.
I placed a plant order with Larch Tree Nursery in Cumbria on their website on Sunday morning. It was delivered within 48 hours; all the plants were well wrapped, a good size and healthy.
Second, a good bargain
I popped in to the local Hillers Nursery the other day and in the reduced plant section was this itea ilicifolia.
Not the biggest specimen perhaps but I only paid £1 for it!
Third, a good recovery
The plant trained against the trellis is abutilon megapotanicum.
After last winter, there was just one live shoot left alive, only a few inches tall. It has made six feet in one season.

Good service Andrew! I think my Abultion is maybe in too dark a position i moved it last year to the back fence but there are 3 trees in that bit and i didn't get many flowers this year, i am leaving this year and see if it does any better next, if not will have to move it again!

SK - it's a native of Brazil so is used to lots of light. I have mine facing south in full sun

Larch Cottage is a good Nursery - have you got their catalogue, Andrew? It was NOT cheap, but worth every penny - I read it like a novel.....it's a better read than some of them! Glad to see the Abutilon looking so healthy. That Itea is on my wish-list!

spritz - I had an itea planted near the back of the garage but it is not happy - in fact anything I plant there looks miserable. I was trying to decide whether to tranplant it when I saw this growing strongly for just £1 so I'll pot the other one up and if it recovers, it can go on the Plant Sales table. As for the-area-where-nothing-will-grow, I have a cunning plan

I bet your cunning plan will be a lovely plant that
a) I can't grow, or...
b) I shall have to put on my wish-list! LOL.

Probably both - lol
I'm going to grow lemon verbena (which is not hardy) in a pot and stand it there

Thanks Andrew , that's interesting , my Abutilon is in the full sun in the afternoon and is against the house wall , Maybe I will leave it unprotected this year .... I hate the thought of losing it , but it was a nuisance covering it everytime there was going to be a frost , it would be one less job to do .... :o)

Amy - if you use horticultural fleece, you can leave it in place for winter without having to bother with raising and lowering it. Elsewhere in the garden, I had a tenderish shrub planted against a house wall last spring. I put fleece over it (pegged at the top and down the sides with the bottom held in place by a couple of bricks) - this went in place in mid October when we had some snow and didn't come off until March. There was absolutely no damage to the shrub despite temperatures down to -8C

Thanks Andrew , last year I had three canes in front of it with fleece spread across , but because it was getting the sun in the day I didn't like to leave it on to get to warm ... I think I will leave it this year , they seem to be hardier than I thought , they look more fragile than they are ( a bit like us woman really ) LOL...

A bargain at a £ 1.00 lucky you, it is good to hear of Nurseries that deliver on time, so pleased you mentioned the lemon verbena, my daughter had it growing in her garden, I had never seen it before, but, it had a fabulous scent, unfortunately she moved house before I realized what it was!! I am on the look out for some, as we should be able to grow it here?

DD - I bought mine at my local Hilliers Garden Centre. As they are based just outside Romsey, you may like to contact them and see if they can get one for you

Andrew thanks for that, Romsey is not too far as the crow flies.

It's surprising how some things will survive the worst weather and recover so well. It has happened with some of my fuchsias I thought were dead - they started to regrow about July and by now are quite normal size again. Good about your Abutilon.
