Shouldn't You Be In Bed?

It’s the end of October and summer feels like a long time ago. But some of the flowers in my garden don’t think so. Here are some that should have ‘gone to bed’ some time ago – these were all in bloom yesterday.
ACANTHUS
ASTRANTIA
FRAGARIA ‘PINK PANDA’
GERANIUM SANGUINEUM
HELIANTHEMUM
HIERACIUM
ROSA ‘SOUVENIR DE LA MALMAISON’
ROSA ‘THE FAIRY’
ZAUSCHNERIA CALIFORNICA
Not to be outdone, this mahonia is early into flower.

Wonderful blooms - especially like that astrantia and hieracium. Your mahonia would be a wonderful sight as well. It's great that you've still got such lovely colour in your garden.

Isn't it lovely to see the plants still 'awake' !

These are good healthy looking flowers, Andrew. Our mahonia is at the same stage as yours, a mass of flowers. We are enjoying it at the moment but I am concerned for it when the winter weather comes.

Sanbaz - with the exception of last year, when we had snow in October, autumns here seem to be getting longer. Some years, we don't get our first frost until December. This year September was very dry and October extremely mild

Yes we did have snow this time last year or should i say some parts of the country had snow, Sandra i think us up here have had a nicer september & october that we had all summer as it never stopped raining up here this summer. But Andrew your plants look really good and very healthy.

These are lovely Andrew and I guess rarely seen this late. If plants have to delay their rest period more and more with GW do you think they will suffer or just adjust?
31 Oct, 2009
As log as the change is gradual, I think most will adjust although we may have to ensure they get a good feed each year to keep up their strength for an extended flowering display

I was wondering about the feeding Andrew? I hope we dont loose the seasons though - xmas lunch on the beach?

Lots of flowers still looking great, Andrew. :o)

Isn't it lovely to have flowers around still! They'll make winter that much shorter, I hope! You've got a lot of healthy roses there! I suppose I still have some, as well, now I come to think about it. :-)) My Mahonias aren't in flower yet, though.

Yes its is Spritzhenry it still so mild here makes for a very short winter if this continues. Un fortunately without the prolonged cold spell losts of nasties survive to.

Oh - I'm sure we'll get some cold weather soon, Denise! The weather has changed dramatically today, after all!

Lovely - I would bet you will have more than a couple of flowers on Christmas day! Hope you let us know.

Delightful eyefuls! Found an acanthus with one blooming spike among the dried near here & cheered! Tried to grow one in a deep pot without success, almost lost it, so have to find a spot to plant it. Such a stately stalk!

Still looking good Andrew, having a hard winter like last year we hoped it would kill off the bugs no such luck, had just as many this year, much colder today in the shade, we could do with some seasonal weather now, a few crisp mornings would be just the ticket.
